API 5DP drill pipe is a kind of steel pipe with screw thread in the
pipe end. It is used for connecting ground rig equipment and
drilling grinding equipment at the bottom of drilling wells. The
main purpose of drill pipes is to transport drilling mud to the
drill bit. It rises up, lowers and rotates together with the drill
bit. Its strength must withstand the pressure, torque, vibration
and other forces caused by the drill hole. In the oil and gas
exploration and refining process, API 5DP drill pipe can be used
for multiple times. We provide a number of drill pipes available in
various sizes and weights to meet the drilling needs of companies
in the oil and gas industry.
Functions API 5DP drill pipe is mainly applied in oil and gas
exploration and development, such as in the construction of deep
wells, horizontal wells and large-displacement wells. Its main
functions are as follows:
• Drill pipes deliver torque and drive the drill bit to drill
• Exert pressure that can break the rock at the bottom of well on
the drill bit.
• API 5DP drill pipe transmits flushing fluid. Through the ground
high-pressure slush pump or mud pump, drill mud enters into the
inner hole of drill string, flows into the bottom of well to wash
rock debris and to cool down the drill bit, passes through the
annular space between the drill string outer surface and well wall
(carrying rock debris), returns to the ground. Thus, we achieve the
well drilling purpose.
Applicable Scope of API 5DP Drill Pipe
• It can be applicable for series of oil drill pipes with API E75
to S135 steel grades and the outer diameter of 2 3/8″ to 6 5/8″.
• It can be used as double circular bead joint drilling pipe with
high torsional performance.
• It can be applied as BNK C95S drilling pipe of special steel
grades for sulfur oil wells.
• API 5DP drill pipe is furnished in the following API length
ranges: range 1 (18 ft to 22 ft), range 2 (27 ft to 30 ft) and
range 3 (38 ft to 45 ft).

• 1) Our API 5DP drill pipe welding production line is configured
with one CG1600 inertia friction welder, nine sets of Q1319-1A pipe
threading machines, two sets of CNC pipe threading machines, seven
welded bead heat treatment medium frequency induction heating
furnaces, internal bore grinding machine, straightening machine,
bending testing machine and three sets of inspection machines. This
line for drill pipes can produce 20,000 tons of dill pipes every
• 2) Our API 5DP drill pipe adopts upset welding method. The
upsetting production line is equipped with three induction heating
furnaces, one upsetting machine and one set of ancillary equipment.
The annual production of drill pipes is 10,000 tons. After upset
welding, the drill pipe acquires good wear resistance, high joint
strength, high machining precision, high welding strength, good
overall performance, low price and high cost performance.
• 3) The surface nitriding treatment of screw thread can
effectively prevent thread gluing, improve the wear resistance of
thread, and thereby enhance the service life of the API 5DP drill
pipe. Thickness of the nitration layer is generally from 0.2 mm to
0.3 mm. Too large thickness is easy to cause cracking flaws. Too
small thickness will result in poor thread gluing resistance.
Integrated drill pipes should do phosphate treatment with much
smaller thickness, rather than nitriding treatment.
• 4) Joint thread should be processed by the thread turning tool on
the CNC lathe. We make efforts to improve the thread surface
quality, reduce the surface roughness (Ra ≤ 1.6μm), improve the
degree of finish and reduce stress concentration. These measures
can ensure the interchangeability of API 5DP drill pipes. The
standoff of joint threads should be controlled in a reasonable
range so as to ensure a good drill thread engagement.
• Our drill pipes' body has high tensile strength, good bending
performance and good toughness. The body uses carbon alloy seamless
steel pipe. Alloying elements should contain more Cr, Mo and other
elements to improve the tensile strength and impact toughness, and
contain Mn, Si and other elements to improve the elasticity of the

standards. It has low levels of P and S chemical compositions
(containing P with the amount of less than or equal to 0.015 and
with less than or equal to 0.003 S).
